General Information

The Julian Theater Company Playwright Festival 2020 competition is open to all writers and playwrights from the following San Diego County communities: Julian, Borrego Springs, Warner Springs, Ramona, and Descanso. We welcome original works and adaptations that have not been professionally produced. Applications will be accepted until      February 8th, 2020.

Two finalists will be chosen by an independent jury to compete in a limited staged-reading production at the Julian Union High School’s ‘Little Theater’. Sets, costumes, and props will be kept to a minimum. The opportunity of a staged-reading production allows the playwright to experience the full collaborative process of working with cast and crew while building a play from page to stage. Rehearsal times and dates will be determined after finalists have been selected.

The Role of the Playwright

Given the importance of experiencing the full collaborative process, Julian Theater Company asks the two playwright finalists to commit to being available during part of the 2 weeks of rehearsal, attend the festival production of their play, and participate in a Q & A Talkback session between the audience and crew after the staged-reading on Saturday, March 7th 2020.

It must be emphasized that the staged-readings are not intended to be a showcase of a completed play. The readings will be advertised to the audience as works in progress. The Julian Theater Company is committed to the playwright, whom we regard as a creative wellspring of the theater. Our festival seeks to foster the creative process of playmaking, not necessarily having the work finished and polished before the public reading. We value creative work done in rehearsals and the public readings as opportunities to advance each playwright’s developmental goals.

Playwrights are welcome to bring in their own director, cast, and production crew or may opt to have talent from Julian Theater Company direct, cast, and produce their submission. Julian Theater Company can assist with costuming and props as well.
